School Cancellation and Delayed Opening Procedures

The following is the East Providence School Department's School Cancellation and Delayed Opening Procedures:

• The decision to cancel or to delay the start of school will be made by the Superintendent of Schools by 6:00 AM.

• Announcements to cancel or delay the start of school will be made through the Rhode Island Broadcasters Association. All major radio and television stations are participating members.

• You will also receive a telephone message from the district’s ConnectED System notifying you of a school cancellation or delay. Please ensure that your child’s school has accurate and current home telephone numbers on record.

• When announcing a delay in the opening of school, the amount of time in the delay will be indicated along with any other information (for example, a one hour delay, no morning Kindergarten or Preschool). Regular bus transportation and special education bus transportation within the city of East Providence will be delayed by the same amount of time. That is, if school is delayed for one hour, busses will be delayed one hour (for example, a student who is picked up at a set time, such as 7:35 AM, will be picked up one hour later at 8:35 AM).

• If your child is in special education and attends school outside of East Providence, cancellations and/or delays are determined according to what is decided by the school the child attends. If there is a delay in opening school, morning Kindergarten and all morning preschool programs will be canceled automatically. Headstart Programs will follow the delay schedule.
